June 20, 2001

ELLENSBURG, Wash. - Ellensburg Public Library's summer reading program will begin with a barbecue tonight (Wednesday, June 20) from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the Library, 209 N. Ruby. The theme of this year's program is "Dare to Enter the Reading Zone."

"My goal is keep kids reading during the summer when school is out," Josephine Yaba, Ellensburg Public Library children's and young adult librarian, says.

Under the program, children up to 6 years old will receive time cards for an hour's reading, while those 7 to 18 years old will get time cards for two hour's reading. Each time card has an attached raffle ticket for prizes that will be awarded during a concluding pizza party on Aug. 15. The prizes, donated by local merchants, will include Ellensburg Rodeo tickets.

"So, the more time cards they fill out, the better chance they have to win," Yaba adds.

The Central Washington University Alumni Association will assist with tonight's activities, including the first official appearance of "The General," the association's 1952-vintage General fire truck.

"We support literacy," Gina Thompson, CWU Alumni Association events coordinator, gives as the reason for the association's involvement.

Along with the barbecue, those in attendance tonight will be able to have their photo taken aboard "The General," create artwork at a coloring table and play in a bubble machine. CWU bookmarks and Wellington paw prints will also be distributed.

More than 300 students have already signed up to participate in the annual reading program, Yaba says.

For more information, call the Ellensburg Public Library at (509) 962-7250.
