CWU Remembers Dr. Gregory Trujillo

ELLENSBURG, Wash. - Dr. Gregory Trujillo, Central Washington University distinguished administrator, died Sunday, Sept. 25, in Seattle.

His 30-year tenure at CWU included service as vice president for student affairs, director of institutional studies, assessment and evaluation, associate provost for institutional research and assessment, associate dean of students and professor of counseling and testing.

Trujillo, 69, was born in Gobernador, N.M., on Feb. 8, 1936. He received his bachelor's degree in business administration, in 1962, and his master's degree, in 1967, and Ph.D., in 1969, both in guidance and counseling all from the University of New Mexico. Trujillo said he became enamored with the Pacific Northwest while stationed at Fort Lewis in the 1960s.

While at CWU, Trujillo also served on the Yakima Valley Community College board of trustees, the national board of the American Cancer Society and board of directors of Central Washington Comprehensive Mental Health. His community service also included work with the American Psychological Association, American Education Research Association, American Personnel and Guidance Association, Ellensburg's Kiwanis Club and Phi Delta Kappa international association for professional educators. He retired in January of 1999.

Trujillo was also a "confirmed Trekkie," for his self-professed admiration for the "Star Trek" television series. He was also an avid follower of CWU football and basketball.

Beginning in 2002, Trujillo joined the board of directors of the CWU Retirement Association, and served as president from 2004 to his recent resignation for health reasons.

He is survived by his wife, Eleanor, sons David and Michael and their families.

A memorial mass will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 30, at St. Andrew's Catholic Church, in Ellensburg, with a reception following.
