Movers and Shakers Lend a Helping Hand at CWU

September 18, 2008

ELLENSBURG, Wash. -- It may seem quiet on the grounds of Central Washington University, but a closer look reveals the hustle and bustle all across campus as staff and faculty make last minute preparations before students arrive. With classes beginning Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2008, and Wildcat Welcome Weekend running from Friday, Sept. 19 through Monday, Sept. 22, the Ellensburg community will see a large number of students moving to town this weekend.

A requirement for all first-year students, Wildcat Welcome Weekend helps new students feel at home at Central. Events are held throughout the weekend that allow them an opportunity to connect with other new students, become familiar with the community, and learn all about the resources that are available to them.

"Over the years, we have received incredible compliments from parents and students on this program," said Elaine Ames, operations and marketing manager of University Housing and New Student Programs.

University Housing and New Student Programs implemented the Movers and Shakers program twelve years ago to help ease the move-in process for new students.

Students and their families will be treated to a free lunch and barbeque dinner Friday. They will also receive a formal welcome from CWU President Jerilyn S. McIntyre, and hear a moving keynote address from David Coleman, a ten-time National Collegiate Speaker of the Year. The following day, they can catch the Wildcat football game and take part in some residence hall competitions and a tailgate dinner.

Check-in for transfer students and current students gets underway Sunday, Sept. 21. For a complete schedule of Wildcat Welcome Weekend events, visit www.cwu.edu/~housing/www.
