ELLENSBURG, Wash. - Central Washington University will commemorate the
first anniversary of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, by joining
forces on campus Wednesday with about 150 fire personnel.
CWU's remembrance at the north end of campus near the library begins at 7
a.m. Sept. 11 with five minutes of silence. Bells will ring at 7:05 a.m.
and 7:28 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time, the times when the World Trade Centers
collapsed. The event also will include remarks by dignitaries, reading of
a poem and music.
Fire departments throughout America will simultaneously commemorate the
first anniversary of the terrorist attacks, according to the Association of
Fire Chiefs.
For the Sept. 11 observance, CWU developed a partnership with Northwest and
Canadian fire personnel who will be at Central Sept. 8-13 for a conference
and with members of the Ellensburg Fire Department.
"We are honored to be partners with this group on such an occasion," said
Dr. Paul Baker, CWU vice president of university relations. "It is
especially significant that fire departments throughout the country are
observing at the same time."
The Association of Fire Chiefs' intent with a simultaneous commemoration is
to conduct a single nationwide salute to fallen firefighters, law
enforcement personnel and civilians alike, and to the extraordinary
response of the entire American fire service for tragic events that have
changed our lives.
