Alumni Association Announces 2008 Award Recipients

ELLENSBURG, Wash. - The Central Washington University Alumni Association has announced its 2008 recipients for Distinguished Alumni, Special Achievement and Excellence in Teaching. The awards will be presented at the annual Alumni Banquet held during Homecoming Weekend. This year's banquet will be Friday, Oct. 24 in Central's Sue Lombard Hall on University Way. Open to the public, the event kicks off with a reception at 5:30 p.m. and is followed by dinner at 6 p.m. For more information and reservations, contact the alumni office at 509-963-2752 or at alumni@cwu.edu.

"Once a year we select five people from Central's 77,000 living alumni to single out for tribute," says Jim Armstrong, Central's director of Alumni Relations and executive director of the Alumni Association. "It's a daunting task, and we always wonder if we can duplicate the quality of past recipients, but as this year's award winners indicate, there is no shortage of truly impressive career achievements by Central alumni."

2008 Distinguished Alumni Awards

  • Robert Panerio, 1953, nominated by the College of Arts and Humanities Panerio is a legend in music education in Washington state. A professional trumpeter, he administrated and taught public school music programs, Big Bend College, Eastern Washington University and Central Washington University. He and his wife Charlotte established the Robert Panerio Trumpet Scholarship at CWU in the 1990s. Click on "Panerio Scholarship" to make a gift.
  • Robyn Caspersen, 1984, nominated by the College of Business Caspersen is an audit partner with the Las Vegas office of the international accounting firm Deloitte & Touche LLP. Prior to that she held executive positions with Transamerica and the Internal Revenue Service. She serves on the College of Business Advisory Board.
  • Carolyn Schactler, 1949/1975, nominated by the College of Education and Professional Studies Schactler taught at CWU for 28 years and was honored as a Distinguished Professor in 1996. She is the recipient of seven major international apparel design awards and was named State Research Scientist of the Year in 1997. She is also a mother of six.
  • Ron Dotzauer, 1972, nominated by the College of the Sciences As co-founder and chief executive officer of the legendary Seattle public relations firm Strategies 360, Dotzauer was named one of the most successful political operatives in Washington history by The Seattle Times.

2008 Special Achievement Award:

  • Eniko Kramar, 1992/1992 Kramar, a neurophysiologist at the University of California, Irvine, is the author and co-author of over a dozen scientific articles. She is senior scientist with the research team that documented the first evidence of physical changes in the brain as a result of memory formation, an accomplishment that was the subject of a four-piece series in The Los Angeles Times. Kramar is an Ellensburg native.

2008 Excellence in Teaching Awards:

  • College of Arts and Humanities
    Cynthia Coe
    is an associate professor in CWU's Department of Philosophy and director of the Women's Studies Program. Her research interests include feminist theory, social and political philosophy, and philosophy of history.
  • College of Business
    Mark Pritchard
    is an associate professor of marketing in the Department of Management and specializes in sports marketing.
  • College of Education and Professional Studies
    Roby Robinson
    is an assistant professor of safety and health management in CWU's Industrial and Engineering Technology Department. Robinson is a certified safety professional and is completing advanced work in environmental design and planning.
  • College of the Sciences
    Judith Hennessy,
    an assistant professor of sociology at CWU, specializes in gender and poverty, specifically low-income women, family and welfare reform.

The CWU Alumni Association is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to advance the interests of Central Washington University and its 77,000 living alumni. The association works in partnership with CWU's Office of Alumni Relations.

About the awards
Distinguished Alumni Award
The Distinguished Alumni Award is given annually to CWU alumni who graduated 20 years ago or more. The award recognizes professional achievement and positive community contributions. Recipients are nominated by the university's four colleges.

Special Achievement Award
The Special Achievement Award is given to alumni who graduation 20 years ago or less and who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in their professional field. Nominations are made by alumni, former students, friends, faculty and staff of CWU.

Excellence in Teaching Award
The Excellence in Teaching Award is presented annually to four non-tenured CWU faculty who exemplify the ideals of superb and creative teaching along with student development and research.
