CWU International Education Week 2006 Coming Up

November 7, 2006

ELLENSBURGWash. - With the title "The Many Meanings of Movement," Central Washington University's sixth annual International Education Week (IEW) is planned for Nov. 13-17 on the Ellensburg campus. It will feature discussions, performances and interactive events designed to bring an international educational experience - in a variety of forms - to the CWU campus and Ellensburg community.

"In international education, there's always movement - movement of ideas, cultures, foods and dance," says Kate McCarthy, IEW chair. "We wanted to broaden the exploration of movement to help us think about how other kinds of interconnectedness affect our everyday lives - in politics, religion, work and activism."

The scheduled events will include a forums on Middle East issues and immigration, Liberian storytelling and dance, a lecture and workshop on Irish dance and cultural nationalism, and a "Global Grooves: Percussion Ensemble" performance by members of the CWU music department.

There will also be Peace Corps and study abroad information sessions, and CWU's Holmes Dining Hall will feature global cuisine throughout the week.

International Education Week, first celebrated in 2000, is sponsored nationally by the U.S. State and Education departments to promote international understanding, to build support for international exchange and to prepare future leaders for work in a global world. CWU's celebration brings together campus groups that work to achieve those same goals, according to McCarthy.

All events are free and open to the public, with the exception of the Classic Film Series movie "Paradise Now." It will be shown Tuesday, Nov. 14, at 7 p.m. in the Student Union and Recreation Center (SURC) Theatre. Tickets are $3. For a list of events, visit www.cwu.edu/~intlprog.
