CWU Guest Speaker To Discuss Library's Role In Society

ELLENSBURG, Wash.-- Dr. Michael Eisenberg, dean of the University of Washington Information School, will present the keynote address at the James E. Brooks Library dedication Saturday, Nov. 15, at 2 p.m. at Central Washington University. "Being part of a celebration like this is irresistible," Eisenberg says. "I'm really honored to be able to do so."

Eisenberg is nationally recognized for his approach to critical thinking and information skills development and is frequently asked to hold lectures on information problem solving, focusing on the use of information and information technology as an effective management aid for individuals and organizations.

His CWU presentation will concern the multi-faceted role of libraries in our society as places to exchange information and receive instruction.

"Universities are the intellectual commons of our society and libraries are the informational commons," Eisenberg says, pointing out that the library is often the first thing one is shown on a university campus. One point of particular interest to Eisenberg is the role of university librarians in respect to students.

It is not always clear if it is better to teach students to make effective use of the resources themselves or to allow students to rely solely on the ability of librarians to meet their information needs, according to Eisenberg, which is a topic that he may address during an informal discussion to be held following the ceremony.
