CWU To Observe National Transgender Day Of RemembranceNovember 10, 2004Contact: Jen Ham (509-963-1368/fax 509-963-3561/e-mail: hamj@cwu.edu) ELLENSBURG, Wash. - Joining more than 60 events worldwide, Central Washington University's Transgender Day of Remembrance is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 18, in the Samuelson Union Building Ballroom. Beginning at 3 p.m., a vigil, sponsored by the CWU diversity education center, will honor the victims of violence against transgender and transsexual people. It will be followed by a screening of "Soldier's Girl," a film based on the relationship between Calpernia Addams, a transgender woman, and Army Pfc. Barry Winchell. In 1999, Winchell was brutally murdered because he was considered gay. Addams will be in attendance and will speak and answer questions from the audience after the film. The National Transgender Day of Remembrance has been established to express love and respect for transgender and transsexual people in the face of national indifference and hatred and to remember people who have died by anti-transgender violence.
