ELLENSBURG, Wash. - A free, public lecture by Dr. Liuxi Meng, Central Washington University foreign language professor, will begin the 2004 CWU College of Arts and Humanities (CAH) Faculty Speakers Series. His presentation, "Women's Literary Education in Eighteenth-Century China: Yuan Mei and His Female Disciples," is slated for Tuesday, Nov. 16, at 4 p.m., in Science Building 142 on the Ellensburg campus.

Meng's presentation will focus on a group of women poets who attended poetry gatherings with their mentor, Yuan Mei (1716-1797), a poet, scholar and artist of the Qing Dynasty known not only for daring to promote poetry by women at a time when it was suppressed, but also for writing about forbidden subjects.

Meng will outline the history of women's education in pre-modern China and then go on to describe the educational activities of Yuan and his female disciples and also demonstrate the literary achievements of those women.

The CAH Faculty Speakers Series is an annual event that takes place Tuesday afternoons throughout the academic year giving CWU students, faculty, staff and the general public an opportunity to learn more about the work of CAH faculty and to provide constructive feedback for faculty works in progress.
