Central's SOURCE Soars To New Heights

May 6, 2008

ELLENSBURG, Wash. - The 13th annual Central Washington University Symposium on University Research and Creative Expression (SOURCE) takes place Thursday, May 15, 2008, in the Student Union and Recreation Center (SURC) from 8 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. The symposium, which continues to grow each year with an unprecedented number of participants, showcases an amazing array of scholarly and creative endeavors from more than 275 student, faculty and staff presenters across various disciplines.

The goal of SOURCE is to foster an awareness of and appreciation for the high quality scholarly and creative endeavors from all academic levels and departments. SOURCE 2008 continues this tradition with oral and poster presentations, as well as musical and theatrical performances and artistic works.

"CWU students benefit from participating in SOURCE by developing and refining their research or creative work with the oversight of a faculty mentor and sharing it with the campus community," says Dr. Kenneth Cohen, CWU family and consumer sciences professor. "SOURCE showcases students' research interests and abilities, and in doing so provides new students with exposure to the variety of opportunities for study as they advance into their major."

Life-long educator and CWU Alumna Virginia Beavert will deliver the keynote address at this year's SOURCE. Beavert, who currently teaches advanced classes at Heritage University in Toppenish, Wash., has received recognition as Washington State Indian Educator of the Year and has been recognized by the Indigenous Language Institute for her lifetime of work and language revitalization. Her efforts in researching, recording and preserving the traditions and language of the Yakama Nation through education exemplifies the power of mentorship celebrated through SOURCE.

SOURCE is sponsored by the Office of the President, the Office of the Provost, the Office of Graduate Studies and Research, Continuing Education, the Central Washington University Foundation, the College of Arts and Humanities, the College of Business, the College of Education and Professional Studies, the College of the Sciences, Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, the Len Thayer Small Grants Programs and the Wildcat Shop.

SOURCE is free and open to the public. Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to attend. For more information and a schedule of presentations, please visit the SOURCE website at: www.cwu.edu/~source.
