ELLENSBURG, Wash. - Central Washington University is hosting the 8th annual "Videmus Lecture and Film Series" through Friday on the Ellensburg campus. The films were selected for their thought-provoking themes and global perspective on a wide range of issues, according to Djordje Popovic, series coordinator.

"The festival provides an open forum for students, faculty and community members to see films that may otherwise be unavailable and discuss some of the most pressing and contentious issues facing our society," Popovic says.

Videmus (literally "we see" in Latin) is sponsored by the CWU diversity education center, college of arts and humanities, departments of anthropology, art, English, foreign languages, history and sociology; Latin American studies; office of international studies and programs; William O. Douglas Honors College and Progressive Student Union.

Each film will be shown at 7 p.m. in Black Hall 151, with CWU faculty members introducing and leading a discussion following the works, which include:

  • Monday, May 9, the 2003 Brazilian film "City of God," presented by history and Latin American studies professor Michael Ervin;
  • Tuesday, May 10, the 1986 U.S. work "True Stories," presented by Brian Goeltzenleuchter, art, and Amy Goeltzenleuchter, English;
  • Wednesday, May 11, "The Celebration," a 1998 film from Denmark, presented by Lene Pedersen, anthropology;
  • Thursday, May 12, the 1971 version of "The Tragedy of Macbeth," directed by Roman Polanski, presented by Laila Abdalla, English; and
  • Friday, May 13, the 2004 Spanish film "Bad Education," presented by Stella Moreno, foreign languages, will conclude the series.

For more information about the film and lecture series, which is free and open to the public, or for persons of disability to arrange for reasonable accommodation, call (509) 963-1687, or (for the hearing impaired) TDD (509) 963-2143.
