ELLENSBURG, Wash. - According to the Association for Non-Traditional
Students in Higher Education, more than 47 percent of college students
are over the age of 25, and being a student is not their full-time job.
They are pursuing careers, raising children and providing community
service as volunteers while they also go to school.
At Central Washington University, there are nearly 1,100
“non-traditional” students. Non-traditional students are those defined
as 25-years-old or older; a single parent; married; or living with a
domestic partner.
To acknowledge high-achieving, non-traditional students at CWU,
the university’s empowerment center, academic advising and student
“non-traditional club” will host a barbecue in their honor Monday, May
19, at 11:30 a.m. in Tunstall Commons.
“We want to acknowledge those who are working hard
(academically),” Carissa Ferrell, empowerment center lead programmer,
says.
The barbecue is the first of what will become an annual event,
Ferrell adds.
