ELLENSBURG, Wash. - Nine students won awards in the Central
Washington University theatre arts department “Pinocchio” coloring
contest.
A panel of celebrity judges chose a first, second and third
place winner in each of three age categories by an anonymous selection
process. Those judging the 22 entries were Donna Nylander, founder of
the Ellensburg Children’s Musical Theatre; Tim Stapleton, CWU guest
artist and “Pinocchio” set designer; and Patrick Elkins-Zeglarski, CWU
guest artist and director of “Pinocchio.”
Winners in the pre-school age group are: first place Katie
Gabriel, age 4; second place Allison Gilliam, age 3, and third place
Chad Rhinehart, age 3. Winners in the kindergarten to second grade
category are: first place Ryann Shor, second grade; second place John
David Rawlinson, first grade; and third place Trever Gibson,
kindergarten. Winners in the third-fifth grade category are: first
place Cheyenne Thielen, fourth grade; second place Daphne Hall, fifth
grade, and third place Kasey McNamee, third grade.
The artists had a choice of coloring “The Blue Fairy” or
“Red Fox,” characters from the play brought to life in the costume
renderings of costume designer Paulette Bond.
Third-place winners in each age category won a fancy
goldfish from Ellensburg Pet Center, one free pie of their choice from
Perkins’ Family Restaurant and Bakery and two tickets to “Pinocchio.”
In addition to those prizes, second place winners also received two
free ice cream cones from Campus U-Tote-Em.
First place prize winners received four tickets to
“Pinocchio,” two personal pan pizzas from Grant’s Pizza Place and the
grand prize: an Ichiro Beanie Bear from Central Card Connection. Also,
the first place winners in the kindergarten to second grade and third
through fifth grades categories received arts kits, provided by
Jerrol’s Book and Supply Co.
“We would like to offer a special thank you to the local
merchants who helped with this effort,” says Leslee Caul, director of
marketing and development. “Without the support of Arnold’s Ranch and
Home, Jerrol’s Book and Supply Co., Perkins’ Family Restaurant and
Bakery, Ellensburg Pet Center, Grants Pizza Place, Central Card
Connection, Campus U-Tote-Em and the Daily Record this contest would
not have been possible.”
