ELLENSBURG, Wash. - Central Washington University’s
empowerment center has designated May as “Masculinity Month” on the
Ellensburg campus. In conjunction with that designation, the center
will present three programs focusing on masculinity.
Thursday, May 8, Patrick Lemmon, co-founder and co-director
of “Men Can Stop Rape” will make a free, public presentation, titled
“Real Man: Creating a New Non-Violent Masculinity,” at 7 p.m. in the
Samuelson Union Building (SUB) Theatre.
“It will focus on ways we can redefine the stereotypical
concept of masculinity,” Alyssa Walz, empowerment center lead gender
programmer, says.
Men Can Stop Rape helps young men, and institutions that serve them, to
work with women to prevent rape and other forms of men’s violence.
“In addition, a table of sexual assault information will be
provided in the SUB that night by the Wildcat Wellness Center,” Walz
says.
While on campus, Lemmon will also conduct a workshop for
student leaders.
From May 5-8, the center will sponsor the annual CWU White
Ribbon Campaign, as men from campus staff tables in the SUB Pit and
Nicholson Pavilion from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
“They will be handing out white ribbons and asking men to
support their efforts to stop violence against women,” Walz points out.
In addition, the empowerment center will sponsor a
“masculinity panel,” involving four male students from CWU, who will go
to local high schools to talk about masculinity and its many forms.
