ELLENSBURG, Wash. - Topics ranging from Chinese calligraphy
to travel on the cheap, and from Chicano history to Pacific Rim
relations, will be addressed during workshops at the first Central
Washington University International Education and World Languages Day.
About 400 high school students are expected to come to the
Ellensburg campus for the event on May 16 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
“These workshops will be presented by a variety of
university faculty, students and staff, representatives of foreign
governments, international businesspeople and artists, and members of
the Ellensburg community.” Dr. Joshua Nelson, CWU department of foreign
languages chair, says. “This event requires the collaboration of a
broad coalition of people who have spontaneously and enthusiastically
volunteered their time, energy and expertise to create a day of quality
programming.”
CWU President Jerilyn S. McIntyre will provide welcoming
remarks, followed by keynote addresses by three CWU students who will
speak about their experiences with languages, diverse cultures and
international travels.
While on campus, students can visit language classes, learn
about internationally focused degrees at CWU, meet students from around
the world, speak with current CWU students about their experiences
overseas and tour campus.
Another highlight will be a mid-day presentation by “Ade
Fua,” an African music, dance and dramatic troupe, based in the Seattle
area.
“The day is designed to encourage students and faculty to
develop interest in and sensitivity to diverse world cultures,” Nelson
adds. “It’s the hope of the planners that a clear message will be sent
about Central’s commitment to preparing students for lifelong learning
in a diverse and changing world.”
The event is sponsored by the CWU admissions office,
conference center, department of foreign languages, office of
international studies and programs, office of the provost, student
affairs and enrollment management, College of Arts and Humanities,
College of Business, College of Education and Professional Studies, CWU
Foundation and Ellensburg High School.
