ELLENSBURG, Wash. - In conjunction with Women's History Month this
month, the Central Washington University Center for Student Empowerment
will present several programs.
They are:
- A screening of film "Iron Jawed Angels" on Tuesday, March 8, at 11:30
a.m. in the Samuelson Union Building (SUB) Pit. The movie, which
premiered in 2004 on HBO, portrays the struggle of suffragists who
fought for the passage of the 19th Amendment. The film's award-winning
cast including Hilary Swank, Francis O'Connor, Julia Ormond, Anjelica
Huston and Patrick Dempsey, who bring to life the historical figures
who broke from the mainstream women's-rights movement and pushed to
secure voting rights for women in 1920.
- Dr. Kathleen Kennedy will lecture on "The Priest vs. The Domestic:
The Charge of Rape in a 19th-Century Courtroom," Thursday, March 10, at
4 p.m. in the SUB Owhi Room. Kennedy, a Western Washington University
professor, will present an historical case in which an immigrant woman
charged a Catholic priest with attempted rape and will explore the way
gender, race and religion played a role in the courtroom. Kennedy's
presentation is co-sponsored by Wildcat Wellness Center and CWU history
department.
- The film "V-DAY Until the Violence Stops" will be shown Monday, March
28, at noon and 7 p.m. in the SUB Pit. The 2005 Sundance Film Festival
favorite features emotionally charged interviews and readings by
everyday and celebrity women, all of whom courageously reveal their
intimate experiences and bond together to break the silence that
surrounds abuse.
