ELLENSBURG, Wash. - As the next presentation in the Central Washington University College of Arts and Humanities Faculty Speaker Series, Dr. Christopher Schedler will give a lecture titled "Schizo Violence in the Capitalist Machine: Alejandro Morales' The Brick People." The free, public presentation is set for Tuesday, March 8, at 4 p.m. in Science Building, Room 142.

Schedler, a CWU English professor, will discuss the dual process by which Mexican migrants, displaced by the Mexican Revolution, were then constrained within the U.S. as a captive labor force.

Schedler will use Alejandro Morales' 1988 novel "The Brick People" to illustrate how natural and human acts of violence create a revolutionary potential by which Mexican Americans might escape the strict social constraints imposed by the modern U.S. capitalist machine.

Morales' novel traces the growth of a Mexican-American community centered around a brick factory on the Los Angeles outskirts.

Along with being an author, Morales is a professor of Spanish, Latin American and Chicano literature and film studies at the University of California, Irvine.

The CAH Faculty Speakers Series is an annual event that takes place Tuesdays throughout the academic year. It allows CWU students, faculty, staff and the general public to learn more about the work of college's faculty and to provide constructive feedback for faculty works in progress.
