CWU Students To Present At Collegiate Honors Council

ELLENSBURG, Wash. - Five Central Washington University seniors in the William O. Douglas Honors College have been selected to present academic papers at the Western Regional Honors Council spring meeting April 7-9 in Las Vegas.

The five students and their projects are:

  • Lindsay Groce, from Richland, who is majoring in biology -- "Antigone: A Study of Gendered Ethics." Her faculty advisors are Drs. Cynthia Coe, philosophy, and Anthony Diaz, chemistry;
  • Jennifer Jung, Tacoma, English -- "A Room of One's Own: Woolf's Feminist Essay and the Young Woman of Today." Drs. Christine Sutphin, English, and Loran Cutsinger, anthropology are the faculty advisors;
  • Jennifer Lampi, Tumwater, mathematics -- "Paradise Lost and the Image of a Tyrant: Comparison of Satan and King Charles I." The faculty advisors are Drs. Gerald Stacy, English, and Yvonne Chueh, mathematics;
  • Elizabeth McCune, Hemet, Calif., psychology -- "The Irish Simian: An Examination of the Effects of Early Evolutionary Theory on Visual Representations of the Irish in the Late 19th Century." Drs. Lila Harper, English, and Mathew Manweller, political science, are the faculty advisors; and
  • Josh Munroe, Ellensburg, philosophy -- "The Ongoing Journey to the West: China's Economic Potential and Struggles in the Global Marketplace," with Drs. Liuxi Meng, foreign language, and Bruce Palmquist, physics, serving as the faculty advisors.

The CWU students will be among those from colleges and universities in 13 states -- Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming -- who will attend the conference.

The Western Regional Honors Council is a professional organization of faculty, administrators and students dedicated to the promotion and advancement of undergraduate honors education. It is one of six regional councils that comprise the National Collegiate Honors Council.

Dr. Sura Rath, DHC director, Dr. Virginia Mack, assistant director, and fellow honors college faculty member Dr. Gerald Stacy will accompany the students in Las Vegas.
