ELLENSBURG, Wash. - The Central Washington University theatre arts department is sponsoring a “Pinocchio” coloring contest for Kittitas County youngsters in pre-school through the fifth grade. Prizes for first, second and third place entries will be awarded in three age categories: 4 years old and under, kindergarten through second grade and third through fifth grades.

The contest is being held in conjunction with the CWU theatre arts presentation of “Pinocchio,” which will be presented April 25 and 26, at 7 p.m., and April 26 and 27, at 1 p.m., in Tower Theatre.

Adapted by Madge Miller from the classic Italian fairy tale by Carlo Collodi, it’s about a naughty little puppet that becomes a real, live boy when he learns, through a series of journeys and mistakes, that honesty and loyalty matter most. “Gepetto,” “The Blue Fairy” and “The Talking Cricket” are among the characters that help this little “block-head” find his heart.

Departing from the familiar cartoon version, guest director Patrick Elkins-Zeglarski adapts the story by altering the setting to a small 1860’s Northwest logging camp where a touring troupe of players arrives and, using materials they find in the forest, unfold the magical storybook tale.

Scenic design for the production is provided by guest artist Tim Stapleton, who has designed several other CWU shows including “Romeo and Juliet,” “Comedy of Errors,” “Beauty and the Beast” and most recently “Hay Fever.” Young local artists have a choice of coloring “The Blue Fairy” or “Red Fox,” characters from the play brought to life in the costume renderings of costume designer Paulette Bond.

Three third-place winners in each age category will win a fancy goldfish from Ellensburg Pet Center, one free pie of their choice from Perkins’ Family Restaurant and Bakery and two tickets to “Pinocchio.” In addition to those prizes, second place winners will also receive two free ice cream cones from Campus U-Tote-Em.

First place prize winners will receive four tickets to “Pinocchio,” two personal pan pizzas from Grant’s Pizza Place and the grand prize: an Ichiro Beanie Bear from Central Card Connection for the 4 years old and younger first place winner, along with arts kits, provided by Jerrol’s Book and Supply Co. for the first place winners in the kindergarten to second grade and third through fifth grades categories.

Coloring sheets can be picked up at Arnold’s Ranch and Home, Jerrol’s Book and Supply Co. and Perkins’ Family Restaurant and Bakery. Completed entries should be mailed by April 11 to the CWU Theatre Arts Department, ATTN: Coloring Contest, 400 E. 8th Ave., Ellensburg, WA 98926-7460. Winners will be notified by phone.
