ELLENSBURG, Wash. - Based on his “outstanding commitment to his students and
his profession,” David Vance, a 1986 graduate of Central Washington
University, is among 33 nominees for a 2003 Golden Apple Award for
Excellence in Teaching in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. Vance
currently teaches second grade at Spring Brook Elementary School in
Naperville, Ill.
“As an institution that seeks to inspire the best in its students,
Central Washington University should be proud of this graduate who
represents your school so well,” Dr. Elaine Schuster, Golden Apple
Foundation president and chief executive officer, says.
The not-for-profit Golden Apple Foundation presents the annual
awards to recognize and develop excellence in teaching. More than
1,100 teachers from three Chicago-area counties were eligible for the
award, which was first presented in 1986.
From the 33 finalists, 10 Golden Apple Award winners will be
selected. They will each receive a tuition-free fall-term sabbatical
at Northwestern University; $2,500; a personal computer from Apple; and
induction into the Golden Apple Academy, which now numbers 170 members.
A committee of more than 70 Chicago-area educators will make the
final selection, based on input from two committee members who observed
each of the 33 finalists in their classrooms and interviewed their
principal, selected colleagues, parents and students.
The 10 award winners will be honored at a formal ceremony on May
31 in Chicago.
