'John Hawkins: Woodcuts' Now On Display At CWUMarch 1, 2004Contact: Molly Fortin (509-963-1493/fax 509-963-2301/e-mail: fortinm@cwu.edu) ELLENSBURG, Wash.-- The distinctive artwork of John Hawkins will remain on display through March 5 at Central Washington University's Sarah Spurgeon Gallery. "John Hawkins: Woodcuts" features work from throughout the stages of Hawkins' artistic development during the last 50 years. His woodcut landscapes reveal influences from the work of Matisse, the Renaissance, Art Nouveau and Japanese prints. "Hawkins welcomes the observer into his work through his perception of lines and carefully organized compositions," says Faustino Quintanilla, gallery director at Queensborough Community College in Bayside, New York, where Hawkins is a professor emeritus. "His lines describe, identify and trace the direction of movement, and his elegant patterns, flat shapes, colors and washes blend to create unity." Born and raised in Minneapolis, Hawkins attended the University of Minnesota in the 1950s and earned bachelor's and master's degrees in fine arts. In college, he began creating woodcuts which, in 1973, became his primary form of expression. His work has been exhibited in juried shows throughout the country. Hawkins' woodcuts are on display in the Randall Hall gallery weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For more information, or for persons of disability to arrange for reasonable accommodation, call (509) 963-2665, or (for the hearing impaired) TDD (509) 963-2143. |
