March 18, 2002

Contact: Brittany Faulkner (509-963-1504/e-mail: faulkneb@cwu.edu)

ELLENSBURG, Wash. - Community leaders from across the state of Washington will join together at 11 a.m. via televised satellite broadcast on April 4 to discuss how modern digital technologies and telecommunications can benefit their communities. The statewide satellite event is organized by the Washington State University Center to Bridge the Digital Divide, and facilitated locally by the Open Spaces Technology Center in collaboration with Central Washington University. It is the first of six planned during 2002.

The satellite broadcasts are intended to bring together community leaders from across the state to share ideas and strategies on how modern digital technologies can be applied to benefit economic development, education, health care and governance in rural communities. Each broadcast will include brief presentations from community leaders and other experts discussing topics ranging from strategies for community organization to creating jobs and improved government services through the use of telecommunications.

Business, education, health care, citizen and government leaders will have the opportunity to view the broadcasts and participate in discussions at 12 locations. Those attending broadcasts at each location will be encouraged to participate in follow-up discussions with others across the state via an electronic discussion group hosted by the WSU Center to Bridge the Digital Divide, immediately following each broadcast.

The first broadcast on April 4 will provide live interaction with an innovative rural business owner, a health care leader and a high school superintendent on how computers, the Internet and telecommunications are contributing to their success.

Participate in the statewide discussion and find out about resources available to help your business or organization explore potentially beneficial applications of computers, Internet and Telecommunications.

The local broadcast of the seminar series is facilitated by the Open Spaces Technology Center and will be held in the CWU library, room 153, from 11a.m. to 1p.m. Visit the Washington State University Center to Bridge the Digital Divide website for more information and registration information at www.cbdd.wsu.edu, or contact Brittany Faulkner at (509) 963-1504, or by e-mail at faulkneb@cwu.edu.
