CWU Flags Staying At Half-MastJune 3, 2005Contact: Robert Lowery (509-963-1487/ fax: 963-2301/ e-mail: loweryr@cwu.edu) ELLENSBURG, Wash. - Flags on Central Washington University's Ellensburg campus will remain at half-mast through Tuesday, June 7, following this week's ceremony to remember university students, current and past employees, and friends who have had a significant, positive impact on the university community. The university is following protocol established by the American Legion and office of the Washington secretary of state, as a gesture of respect for individuals, important to the life of the university, who passed away during the preceding year. This year, 34 individuals were honored. The list included: Milton Aas, Joan Bakke, Mae Bowers, David Burt, Lola A. Caviezel, Robert K. Carlton, Bert Christianson, Melinda Sue Cornette, Richard Doi, Mildred Fish, Dustin Foote, Agnes "Scottie" Gaines, Samuel Geiger, Don Goetschius, Odette Golden, Herbert P. Hoover, Albert Imhoff, Margaret Irish, Charles E. Jacobus, Walt Kaminski, Mary Ellen Matson, Lisa McPherson, Anna Miagkova, Lori Kay Mitchell, Mary Munz, Theodore Naumann, Stanley Roberts, Sr., Bettie Ruebel, Helen Savoian, Megan Cleaver-Sellick, Robert Silver, Sue Varnum, Margie A. Whitson and Sarah S. Woo. In 2003, the CWU president's advisory council approved what has become an annual ceremony held the Tuesday after Memorial Day. "It is appropriate for us to pause once a year as a university community to remember all those who have contributed to the university and assisted us in building a stronger foundation for the future," CWU President Jerilyn S. McIntyre says. |
