CWU REMEMBERS DR. ANTHONY CANEDO

ELLENSBURG, Wash. - Dr. Anthony Canedo, Central Washington University English professor emeritus, died Sunday, July 16, at his home in Ellensburg following a nine-year battle with cancer. He would have turned 82 on July 26.

A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., Canedo received his bachelor's degree, in 1954, and his Ph.D., in 1965, both in English from the University of Washington.

Canedo joined the CWU faculty in 1962. His university career included service as English department chair, associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, and assistant vice president for academic affairs.

Canedo taught classes that spanned the gamut, including freshman composition, American literature, modern British poetry and introduction to film. His love of cinema was also apparent as he helped develop the CWU Classic Film Series. While at CWU, Canedo received a Danforth Fellowship to Colorado College, in 1973, and was named the 1988 CWU Distinguished Teaching Professor. He retired in 1989.

Canedo was a U.S. Navy medic from 1941-49. He served on the U.S.S. Crescent City during World War II, including in military campaigns at Bougainville, Guadalcanal and Okinawa. During his time in the service, Canedo also enrolled in a one-year course in the photography school at the Naval Medical Center. That led to his appointment as a photography instructor at the school.

Canedo would go on to become the chief medical photographer at the University of Washington School of Medicine and cinematographer in the UW anatomy department.

Canedo photos were also published in U.S. Camera Annual, featured in a one-person show at the CWU Sarah Spurgeon Gallery and selected for the Eastman Kodak international exhibit "Photography at Mid-Century."

He is survived by his wife, Agnes, CWU financial aid director, a daughter, Dody Canedo-Fox, stepson, Robert Thielen, stepdaughter Kelly Thielen, and her three children, Skyler, 15; Cheyenne, 13; and Maggie, 3; and a sister, Dolores Marmo. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Grace; and his brother, Angelo.

Memorial arrangements will be announced at a later date.
