ELLENSBURG, Wash. - “Succeed in Sports, Lead in Life” is the theme for the 17th Annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) celebration Feb. 5 in Washington, D.C., and across the country. Chartered by the U.S. Congress in 1986, NGWSD honors female athletic achievement and recognizes the importance of sports and fitness participation for all girls and women.

Locally, Central Washington University will host an NGWSD event Saturday, Feb. 1, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Nicholson Pavilion on the Ellensburg campus. It will include instructional clinics in five different sports – basketball, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball -- for girls ages 8-13 and their mothers, or a female mentor. A $10 registration fee will include lunch, two tickets to a CWU women’s basketball game, guest speakers and the instructional clinics.

This is the first local NGWSD commemoration, according to Steve Waldeck, director of Central’s university recreation. It’s sponsored by the CWU department of athletics, recreation program, center for student empowerment, Ellensburg School District, Ellensburg Parks and Recreation, Coca-Cola, Papa John’s Pizza, Bi-Mart and Safeway.

Walk-up registrations will be offered, though phone reservations are required. To make a reservation, for more information, or for persons of disability to arrange for reasonable accommodation, call (509) 963-3512, or (for the hearing impaired) TDD (509) 963-3323.

NGWSD is celebrated in all 50 states with community-based events, award ceremonies and activities honoring achievements and encouraging participation of girls and women in sports.
