ELLENSBURG, Wash. - Central Washington University’s Classic Film Series continues Tuesday, Jan. 29 with the 2001 documentary, “The Endurance.” This film is a retelling of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s unfortunate voyage to Antarctica in 1914-1916, featuring new footage of actual locations and interviews with surviving relatives of key expedition members. There also are archived audio interviews with expedition members.
Before Shackleton’s wooden ship could reach the continent, it was caught in the pack ice where it was held for 10 months and then crushed. Shackleton and five men sailed more than 850 miles to a small island and then hiked around the glaciers and crevasses to a whaling station. There, he secured a boat and began the voyage back to his stranded men.
This film won Best Documentary award at the International Film Festivals in Seattle and Portland. It has been called the “greatest survival story of all time.”
