CWU Presents 'The Meeting'

ELLENSBURG, Wash. - What would have happened had Malcolm X and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. had a chance to collaborate before each was assassinated? That's the subject of the critically acclaimed play "The Meeting," which will be performed at Central Washington University on Thursday, Feb. 16. The free, public presentation is slated for 7 p.m. in Hertz Auditorium.

The play, to be performed by Boston-based Grimes Theatre Group, is based on a brief 1964 meeting between the two leaders in Harlem.

Written by Jeff Stetson, the production is a fictitious encounter that "captures the humanity, political maturity and enduring integrity of the two leaders while addressing issues still relevant today: war abroad, violence at home, inner city hopelessness, black self-empowerment and religious diversity," according to Djordje Popovic, CWU diversity education center program coordinator.

Stetson has received eight NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) Theater Image awards for the work.

The CWU showing is sponsored by the Center for Excellence in Leadership, Diversity Education Center, Black Student Union and Equity and Services Council.
