ELLENSBURG, Wash. - Central Washington University’s board of trustees (BOT) is poised to take action on the location and final design for CWU’s Student Union Building and Recreation Center (SUB/REC) Feb. 14 during its regular meeting beginning at 1 p.m. in Barge 412 on the Ellensburg campus.
After more than seven years of careful consideration and two external studies, the preferred location is the lawn just north of Black Hall extending into the area that is currently Holmes Dining Hall.
The SUB/REC is designed as two linked buildings intended to provide a central campus location for a variety of student-life activities. The SUB portion will house traditional student services, meeting spaces, dining services, and the University Bookstore, while the REC portion will include intramural sports courts, racquetball courts, and weight and fitness space. A linked facility is more cost effective than separate buildings because it allows for a single mechanical support system and cooperative maintenance operation.
The CWU trustees will also take action on a number of academic and budgeting items, including summer session funding, distance education compensation and a new graduate program -- Master’s of Education: Inclusive Teaching Strategies. The new graduate program, pending HECB approval, is intended for practicing teachers and designed to further their skills and knowledge with respect to the dynamics involved in contemporary K-12 classrooms.
Interested persons may attend the meeting on the Ellensburg campus in Barge 412 or view a live broadcast on cable television Channel 61, Community TV – Channel 2, and at the Central Washington University SeaTac and Lynnwood centers.
