December 27, 2006

ELLENSBURG Wash.-- Beiyin Hu, longtime faculty member in Central Washington University's UESL (University English as a Second Language) program, died on Monday, Dec. 25, following a lengthy illness.

At CWU, Beiyin earned her master's degree in English, specializing in Teaching English as a Second Language and Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL). In 1990, she began teaching in the UESL program, retiring in 2005.

Beiyin is survived by her husband, Dr. Kelton Knight, CWU professor of French, daughter, Rujun, and her mother, two sisters and brother, who all live in China.

Prior to her work at Central, she also taught English at Anhui University in China for 11 years and in middle schools there for an additional five years. Away from the classroom, Beiyin was an enthusiastic pingpong player and actually served as a pingpong tournament judge in China.

At her request, there will be no public funeral or memorial service.
