ELLENSBURG, Wash. - Auditions for Central Washington
University theatre arts department’s winter-quarter production of “The
Laramie Project,” will be held Tuesday, Jan. 7, at 7 p.m. in the Tower
Theatre, with callbacks at the same time and place the following day.
Those auditioning should prepare a one-minute contemporary
monologue, according to Michael J. Smith, director and CWU theatre arts
professor.
“The Laramie Project” is a documentary-style drama that
recounts the attitudes and opinions of the residents of Laramie, Wyo.,
as the town dealt with the murder of a University of Wyoming student,
who was the victim of a hate crime.
Playwright Moisés Kaufman and fellow members of New York’s
Tectonic Theater Project made six trips to Laramie, conducting more
than 200 interviews — some with those directly involved with the case
as well as others with uninvolved citizens — as they developed the
play. Kaufman and Tectonic Theater members have constructed a deeply
moving theatrical collage that explores the depths of human violence
and heights of human compassion.
CWU performance dates are slated Feb. 27-March 2 and March
6-8. The rehearsal schedule will be announced at auditions.
