ELLENSBURG, Wash. - In observance of both Arbor Day and Earth
Day, Central Washington University will host a combined celebration
Saturday, April 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., near the university Science
Building. The event will include a special look inside the CWU
greenhouse.
“We’ll have photosynthesis demonstrations set up, kids’
activities, a self-guided tour of the greenhouse and refreshments,”
says Dr. Steven Verhey, CWU biological sciences professor.
Central’s greenhouse actually consists of four individual
greenhouses: tropical oasis; bromeliads and lab specimens; desert
dwellers; and orchids, begonias and more, that share a common glass
roof. Each has its own climate controls, watering schedules and
specimen types. The different types of plants correspond to different
levels of humidity, temperature and sun exposure in each of the four
rooms.
Presented by a number of campus and community groups, the
commemorative event will also feature a variety of other hands-on
activities and learning opportunities, informational booths,
demonstrations in the “Enviro-Zone,” live music by the “Alder Road”
band and a complimentary barbecue lunch.
In addition, CWU, in cooperation with Starbucks, will
sponsor a “Ganges Clean Up” to restore the banks of the Town Ditch,
which runs adjacent to and through the Ellensburg campus.
