CWU Remembers Larry Watson

ELLENSBURG, Wash. - Longtime Central Washington University photographer Larry Watson died Sunday, April 16, in Ellensburg. Following his discharge from the Army, Watson, 66, began working for CWU's Instructional Media Center on July 1, 1970.

Watson's photography was instrumental in CWU receiving numerous graphic design awards, including from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) and Chinook awards from the Yakima Advertising Federation.

Dr. Becky Watson (no relation), CWU's director of public relations and marketing, was a student production photographer working for Watson in the 1980s. She recalls how much he taught to and cared for his student workers.

"If you were in need of anything, he was there to give you a hand up," she says.

Watson retired Oct. 31, 2001, and was subsequently awarded university distinguished civil service status.

At his retirement ceremony, he was commended for his top-notch work, friendly nature, sense of humor, affinity for his co-workers, and for being an "inspirational role model for those battling a life-threatening disease. (He) is actively involved with the annual 'Cancer Walk' and helps people in the community who are struggling with the disease."

Watson was afflicted with nose, mouth and throat cancer, and endured side effects from radiation he received as part of his treatment.

He is survived by his mother, two sisters; wife, Senta; son, Edward and his wife Bev, of Ellensburg; daughter, Katharina, of Kittitas; and six grandchildren.
