ELLENSBURG, Wash. - Four Central Washington University music majors received a combined $1,200 in scholarships during the annual Helen Crowe Snelling Memorial Music Competition held April 12.

The 16th annual event, sponsored by the Ellensburg Music Study Club, was hosted by CWU in Hertz Hall on the Ellensburg campus, with music professors John Michel and Hal Ott serving as contest adjudicators.

The winners are:

  • CareyAnn Brady, a senior from Ellensburg, received a $500 award for her viola performance. Brady is a 1997 transfer student to CWU from New School University in New York;
  • Lesley Beckman, senior, Chehalis, won a $350 flute scholarship. She is a 1998 graduate of W.F. West High School;
  • Sara Radke, junior, Toppenish. Radke, who graduated from Toppenish High School in 1997, earned a $200 award for her soprano voice presentation;
  • And, Philip Dean, junior, Pasco, whose trombone performance gained him a $150 scholarship. He is a 1999 graduate of Kennewick High School.

Since 1986, the Ellensburg Music Study Club has awarded nearly $20,000 in music scholarships to junior high and high school students, and university instrumentalists and vocalists, according to Carla Kaatz, the Washington Federation of Music Clubs’ Helen Crowe Snelling competition chair.

Snelling, a concert pianist and opera singer, served as a voice teacher in Washington state for 45 years. In addition, she helped found the Washington Federation of Music Clubs, of which the Ellensburg club is a senior member. She left 10 percent of the net income of her estate to the federation to fund the annual competitions.
