HECB To Hold Public Hearing In Ellensburg On College Admission Standards

OLYMPIA, Wash. - Members of the Washington state Higher Education Coordinating Board (HECB) will hold a public hearing at Central Washington University on Tuesday, April 19, to hear public reaction to the panel's draft plan for revising the state's minimum college admission standards. The meeting will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Yakama Room of the Samuelson Union Building.

The HECB is proposing changes to the state's minimum freshman admission standards for students entering college in fall 2008. Recommended changes include requiring a fourth year of high school math and a more rigorous science requirement.

Washington state statutes require the Higher Education Coordinating Board to define minimum basic freshman admission standards for Washington's public four-year college and universities. The standards have not been significantly revised since they were first implemented in 1988.

The Ellensburg hearing is the third of five scheduled across the state during April and May. The board is also accepting written comments through May 20.

Following public comment, the board is expected to adopt a final version of the proposal this summer. The draft rules are available online at www.hecb.wa.gov.
