| CWU Reports Record Enrollment & Higher-Achieving Students | CWU is reporting record enrollment for fall term, which began Sept. 26. The total number of students now studying at the university's seven campuses is 7,980 FTE (full-time equivalent) students, up from 7,625 FTE last year, for a 4.7 percent increase. Central's FTE enrollment surpasses the previous high of 7,935 in 1996. The university's freshman class is also the largest in school history and one of its most academically talented with a larger percentage above a 3.5 grade point average. |
| CWU Homecoming Honors Legends and Heroes | The Vietnam Veterans Moving Wall Memorial, a half-size replica of the Washington, D.C., Vietnam Veterans Memorial, will be on display Oct. 22-26 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Oct. 27 from 8 a.m. to noon at the International Flag Pavilion on CWU's Ellensburg campus. The "Vietnam Wall's" presence provides a way for people to honor veterans and those now serving in the armed forces. It is part of CWU Homecoming activities with the theme "In Search of Legends and Heroes." Other activities include military forums, student events, theatrical productions and a salute to vets prior to the football game between CWU and Humboldt State, Saturday, Oct. 27. |
| New CWU Council Embraces Diversity | CWU President Jerilyn S. McIntyre has announced the formation of a new university diversity council. The formation is in response to reports and suggestions made during the last several years. Dr. Patsy Callaghan, CWU English department chair, will also chair the diversity council. It will report to the president and serve as the focal point for a variety of diversity issues on the Ellensburg campus and the university centers. Council members will work together, in consultation with the president, to develop both short- and long-term initiatives that are strategic and measurable. |
| CWU, Community Partnership Addresses Computer Literacy | A partnership between CWU and several local organizations has resulted in a $283,971 grant from the U.S. Department of Education to establish the "Open Spaces Technology Center." The center will include a mobile computer lab and provide for the installation of computers in the Ellensburg Youth Center. It will focus on improving computer literacy in the community, providing community access to the Internet and opportunities for children to enhance school performance using technology. |
