| GOV. LOCKE ANNOUNCES FUNDING FOR NEW CWU 'CAREER SWITCHER PROGRAM' | Gov. Gary Locke announced that $38,000 in start-up funding has been allotted for a new Central Washington University 15-month teacher certification program. The intensive 'Career Switcher Program' will help engineering and math professionals switch into teaching careers. "This innovative approach to addressing the critical shortage of math teachers is particularly timely, given the recent layoffs at Boeing and in the high tech sector," said Locke. The post-baccalaureate program will be offered at the CWU Lynnwood Center beginning September 2002 and ending December 2003. The program has received strong support from regional Workforce Development Councils, WorkSource Centers, Boeing Career Transition Centers, the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace and the Washington Employment Security Department. |
| SEN. CANTWELL ANNOUNCES FEDERAL GRANT TO CWU | U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) announced June 8 that Central Washington University will receive $250,377 in continued federal funding for its Educational Opportunity Center (EOC). The four-year grant from the U.S. Department of Education will assist as many as 2,500 adults in Washington state annually in beginning or continuing a program of postsecondary education. "This grant will go a long way in providing educational opportunity to adults who were unable to go to college after high school, and I congratulate the entire university on receiving this important grant and for the success of the EOC program," said Cantwell. |
| CORONA APPOINTED CWU VP FOR BUSINESS AND FINANCIAL AFFAIRS | CWU President Jerilyn McIntyre named Rich Corona, former interim vice president for business and financial affairs during the 2001-02 academic year, the new vice president for business and financial affairs. "I'm delighted that Rich has agreed to continue the work he has already begun," said McIntyre. "He is a highly-respected member of the university community, a person of high integrity and a valued member of our administrative team." Corona has served in senior financial, contracting and facilities management positions at CWU for the past 17 years. |
| MILLER NAMED COTS DEAN AT CWU | Dr. Meghan Miller, a CWU professor of geological sciences, was selected for a two-year term as interim dean of Central Washington University's College of the Sciences (COTS). "Dr. Miller was selected from a pool of three highly qualified finalists for the position," Dr. David Soltz, provost/senior vice president for academic affairs, said. "She brings to the position the combination of experience, expertise, and vision that will allow her to effectively lead the college, facilitate the faculty in focusing the mission and direction of COTS, and bring it to a higher level of excellence." Miller joined the CWU faculty in 1991 and from 1992-1998 served as chair of the department of geological sciences. |
