CWU Graduate Receives Award From President Bush CWU alumnus Richard DeLorenzo received the Baldrige Award from President George W. Bush. DeLorenzo is the Superintendent of the Chugach, Alaska, School District, was recognized because of its exemplary achievements in recent years. DeLorenzo said, "We believe we're the first district in America to go to a performance-based system supported with best practices." They are one of three schools to receive the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award in Education, which was created in 1987 and named after the former Commerce Secretary. DeLorenzo will make the keynote presentation at the Washington State Quality Award Symposium May 14 in SeaTac.
Sen. Cantwell to Address CWU Ellensburg Commencement U.S. Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., will present the commencement address at Central Washington University's 11 1th graduation ceremony Saturday, June 8, in Ellensburg. An estimated 900 students are expected to participate in CWU graduation ceremonies that are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. at Tomlinson Stadium. Cantwell received her bachelor's degree in public policy from Miami University of Ohio in 1980 and then moved to Washington. Six years later, at the age of 28, she was elected to the state legislature, where she served as a chief architect of the state's Growth Management Act. In 1992, she was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Seattle's first congressional district. Cantwell left Congress in 1995 but rejoined the political scene in 2001 when she was elected to the Senate.
CWU to Inaugurate Presidential Speaker Series Dr. Jean Kilbourne, an internationally recognized expert on the relationship between advertising and addiction, will deliver the first Central Washington University Presidential Speaker Series lecture. Kilbourne, who has twice been named Lecturer of the Year by the National Association for Campus Activities, will discuss, "Deadly Persuasion: Advertising & Addiction," Wednesday, May 15, at 7:30 p.m. in McConnell auditorium. CWU President Jerilyn S. McIntyre established the Presidential Speaker Series to provide an additional source of intellectual stimulation on the campus and a forum for collegiate discourse. This quarter's event will be in conjLlllction with the Symposium on Undergraduate Research & Creative Expression (SOURCE) where Kilboume will also be featured. A portion of seating has been set aside for reserved ticket holders. Tickets can be purchased for $10 at the CWU cashier's office in Barge Hall. White Ribbon Campaign: CWU Men Stand Up Against Violence Toward Women Central Washington University's empowerment center headed the CWU campaign to end violence against women. Male faculty, staff and students participating wore white ribbons as a symbol of their commitment to the effort. "Many men have been affected by violence toward women, be it a partner, sister, mother, grandmother, some woman in their lives," Katrina Whitney, empowerment center director, says. Booths were set up in the Samuelson Union Building and at Nicholson Pavilion April 22-26.
