Veterans Affairs: Tuition Waivers



SUMMARY OF RESTRICTIONS FOR CENTRAL WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY
TUITION WAIVERS (Never Applies to Summer Quarter)

bullet LAW ENFORCEMENT/FIREFIGHTERS WAIVER:

According to RCW 28B.15.380, children of any law enforcement officer or fire fighter who lost his/her life or became totally disabled in the line of duty may receive this waiver and only if study begins within 10 years of high school graduation.


Central Washington University (CWU) does offer this waiver with the following limitations:
  1. CWU will award this waiver to only qualified students pursuing their first bachelor's degree and then up to a total of 225 cumulative credits.
  2. If funds permit, the waiver will be $600 per quarter, if enrolled for a minimum of 6 or more credits.
  3. In addition to income from parent's disability, parent must not have any additional income over $10,000.

The following information would have to be provided by each prospective student:
  1. Proof of parent's total disability (letter from State of Washington, Department of Retirement Systems defining in line of duty)
  2. Copy of student's birth certificate
  3. Parent's death certificate
  4. If parent is married, filing joint return, or filing single return, submit disabled parent's last years income tax statement and copies of all W-2 forms for all income


bullet FACULTY/STAFF DEPENDENT TUITION WAIVER:

According to the Revised Code of Washington, the spouse or child of newly employed faculty or staff may receive a waiver of the out of state portion of their tuition.


Additional CWU restrictions and requirements:
  1. The waiver will be granted for three consecutive quarters only. Students must start school quarter parent is employed by CWU.
  2. Student age 23 and under (copy of birth certificate must be provided).
  3. Copy of contract of parental employment.
  4. If funds permit, the waiver will be for the out of state portion of the tuition for the consecutive quarters. The student is expected to be in the process of establishing residency during that time period.


bullet VETERAN CONFLICT TUITION WAIVER:

Waivers for veterans following enactment of Substitute House Bill 1174. This new law, which was adopted as Chapter 249, Laws of 2005, changed the definition of eligible veterans and eligible members of the National Guard. Under the new law, an eligible veteran means an active duty or reserve military member or a national guard member called to active duty, whose permanent home state is Washington, and who served in active federal service in a war or conflict fought on foreign soil, or in international waters, or who served in support of those serving on foreign soil or in international waters. This waiver replaces all other military conflict waivers awarded in the past by CWU.


Central Washington University (CWU) offers this $600 tuition waiver (each quarter other than summer) with the following limitations and requirements:
  1. Admission to CWU
  2. Enrolled in a minimum of 6 credits
  3. Waiver is good for any catalog approved undergraduate or master's degree
  4. Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty DD-214 Member 4 copy (all waivers are awarded on information that the Department of Defense (DOD) codes on each DD-214)
  5. Waiver can be combined with other academic tuition waivers; however, total waiver may not exceed the cost of quarterly tuition.
