CWU Men's Soccer Regional Tournament!
The CWU Men's Soccer Club played in the Northwest Regional Club Soccer Tournament in Boise, Idaho this past weekend. The club played well despite a few injuries and sick players. The club played 4 games over the weekend, they tied 2 games (Boise State; 1-1, University of Utah; 0-0), won one game (Utah Valley University; 4-2) and lost one game (Salt Lake Community College; 0-2).
The player of the tournament for CWU was Tyson Farley who scored 3 of the 5 goals the club scored in all of their matches. Other players that scored were Kurt Russell and freshman Israel Radlen. Tony Sanchez also was outstanding in goal throughout the tournament and kept the team in some close games with some outstanding saves.
Despite failing to capitalize on some scoring opportunities, the club went into their final game on Sunday morning at the top of their bracket. With a win over Salt Lake Community College they would have been playing in the championship game. CWU was down 1-0 late in the game and pushed everyone up to pressure Salt Lake and try to get a goal. On a counter attack Salt Lake had a break away and a defender took the dribbler down in the penalty box. Salt Lake scored on the penalty kick and won by a score of 2-0.
This was the first time the club has traveled to play in a regional tournament and faced these teams. The club is trying to find more opportunities to play competitive games and this proved to be a great opportunity. Club Vice President Kevin Eggen said "No one expected us to doing anything in the tournament and overall we all play extremely well. Talking to the other teams they were all impressed with our play." The end result was bittersweet. Kevin said he was proud of our whole team, we really stepped up when we needed to. On the other hand it was a little disappointing to know we could have been in the championship game if we finished the chances we had against Boise State and Utah.
The club has two home games this upcoming weekend against Eastern Washington, Washington State and will then compete in the Conference Tournament.
