Climbing Wall Rules

1. Every participant must read, understand and complete the Hold Harmless and Acknowledgement of Risk Agreement prior to entering the climbing wall area.

2. Only participants who have successfully completed a belay exam are allowed to belay other climbers. A certification course is offered for beginners to learn the skills needed to pass the
belay exam. Experienced climbers may pass the belay exam during open climbing hours.

3. Before every climb, participants are required to check their and their belayer's equipment: knots, harnesses, tie-ins, and belay systems must be checked to ensure proper use and set up.

4. Participants must use the posted belay commands.

5. Participants must demonstrate competence using a figure 8 follow - through knot and must be
on belay at all times, except when bouldering.

6. Climbing off route is restricted in order to prevent dangerous pendulum swing in the event of a fall.

7. Climbing above or unclipping the top rope anchors is strictly prohibited.

8. Belayers must demonstrate competence using a harness, locking carabineer and belay device at
all times.

9. The use of floor anchors is recommended to prevent belayers from leaving the ground. Off weight belay teams are required to use floor anchors.

10. When Bouldering, no body part is allowed above the bouldering arch, 13 feet.

11. Pads must be placed as to protect the climber from landing on the floor.

12. One spotter is recommended when bouldering anywhere on the traverse wall.

13. One spotter is required when bouldering on the bouldering arch and when bouldering in an inverted body position. Two spotters are recommended.

14. Topping-out, standing or sitting on the bouldering arch is strictly prohibited.

15. All accidents, damaged equipment, loose holds or safety concerns must be reported to CWU staff immediately.

16. Do not stand on, hang on, or climb on ropes, or floor anchors.

17. No food, drink, or chewing gum is allowed in the climbing wall area.

18. Loose chalk is not allowed in the climbing wall area, chalk balls are allowed.

19. Shoes, shirts, shorts or pants must be worn at all times when in the climbing wall area. Climbing shoes are preferred. It is required to wear socks with CWU rental shoes.

20. It is recommended that you remove all jewelry and tuck in loose clothing before climbing.

21. Any climber may be asked by climbing wall staff to adjust, alter, or discontinue any activity or
behavior judged to be inappropriate, disruptive, or hazardous.

22. Additional Rules and Policies will be posted and enforced as needed.
