About our program

Our Personal Training program offers guidance and assistance in your individual workouts by creating a personalized fitness regime tailored to your goals, and then coaching you through your workouts, ensuring that you exercise at your full potential.  Our Personal Trainers provide motivation, education, support, and guidance for people of all ages and fitness levels.

The Personal Training program at the Recreation Center launched in January 2006.  The program employs an average of ten Personal Trainers per quarter and services CWU students, faculty, staff, and their dependents.  Although most of our clients only exercise with our Personal Trainers an average of two days per week, the majority complete an additional three days per week of activity on their own!  Our clients consistently report feelings of increased energy levels, enhanced concentration skills, decreased stress levels, and improved self-confidence.

Program Pricing
We offer Personal Training services to individuals who are currently members of the Recreation Center.  We strongly suggest working out individually with a Trainer to achieve the most customized fitness program.  But if your more comfortable sharing your sessions with a friend, we also offer Partner Training packages, sold in 6 or 12 session packages.  Remember, though, that when you work out with a partner, you’re sharing your training session with another person and your goals might vary.  So, results may vary from those experienced in individual training sessions.

Certified Personal Trainer vs Trainer in Training
Our certified trainers have taken the necessary coursework and preparation to pass their Personal Trainer exam. They may be certified by any one of the following accredited organizations: ACE, ACSM, NSCA, or AFAA. Passing the personal training examination for any of these organizations is extremely difficult and requires a full knowledge and understanding of the human body and how it responds to exercise in multiple environments, including injury and illness. Our Certified Trainers are recognized by any fitness club in the industry as qualified fitness professionals.

Our "Trainers in Training” are individuals who, although they may not yet be certified, have the knowledge base to design and implement exercise programs for healthy adults. Our "TNT's”, as we affectionately refer to them, must be junior or senior exercise science undergraduate students, be pursuing certification through one of the above mentioned organizations, and/or have experience leading individuals in exercise technique. Our TNT's have limited client availability and are available on a first come, first served basis.

Frequently asked questions

What happens in a typical Personal Training session?
Generally, the first few sessions are spent working out the kinks in the workout- establishing weights and time limits. But don’t let this discourage you! It’s just the way Personal Training operates, to ensure that you get the results you are aiming for. It takes time to understand your capabilities and limitations.
Each session and each workout will build upon your first few sessions. However, you should still wear comfortable workout apparel, as you will be definitely be exercising. Keep in mind if you are already very fit and don’t struggle with motivation, we’ll push those muscles right away!

What happens in my initial consultation?
Your first session with a trainer is crucial to setting you up for success. Many people begin an exercise program with high hopes but discontinue their program after only a couple months. This is usually because their exercise program is not right for their goals, fitness needs, or lifestyle. That’s why your COMPLIMENTARY initial consultation is so important! The majority of your initial consultation will be spent discussing your exercise and health history and outlining your fitness goals. This helps our trainers to determine which type of program will be best for your body- and your motivation! We’ll also establish baseline values by collecting measurements, including body composition, blood pressure, height, weight, and circumference measurements. It’s not scary or negative. It’s the best way to track your progress and help you to feel successful!

How do I get started?
Go to the “Meet Our Trainers” tab and find the trainer that’s right for your goals! E-mail your preferred trainer directly to schedule your initial consultation.

What if I need to reschedule a session?
If you need to reschedule any of your training sessions, you’ll need to contact your trainer a minimum of two hours prior to your scheduled session. If your trainer does not receive at least two hours notice of your cancellation, you will be charged for that session.
Our trainers are busy and their time is important, as is yours. Therefore, we extend the same courtesy of a two hour reschedule notice to you! That way none of us are wasting our time. After all, things come up that are not always planned and we understand that better than anyone!
