Wireless PDA Specifications for

Introduction to Information Technology Course

PDA Purchase: Specifications

 

For this course, students are required to purchase a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA). The recommended PDA (and the exact model used for learning purposes) is the Dell Axim X30 (312 MHz or better) with Integrated Wireless (Regular Cost $279). This PDA can be purchased directly from Dell at www.dell.com.

 

Assignments, course materials, and exams will be designed for the Dell Axim model PDA. Also, technical support will be provided only for the Dell Axim model PDA.  Therefore, you are strongly encouraged to purchase this model for this class.

 

For students who wish to purchase models and/or upgrades other than the recommended PDA, below is a list of MINIMUM specifications that should be included on the PDA:

1.                  Wireless Capability: 802.11b (WiFi), Bluetooth, and IrDA

2.                  Windows Mobile 200x  software for Pocket PC (including Outlook, Pocket Word, Pocket Excel & Windows CE)

3.                  Microsoft ActiveSync software and required hardware for use with desktop

4.                  SDRAM: 64MB

5.                  Voice Record/Recognition

6.                  Media Play software

7.                  Odyssey Client Software pre-installed
 

 

 

APPENDIX B:

 

Instruction Sheet for Accessing the

Central Washington University Wireless System
Registering Your PDA with ITS

 

NOTE: For support of your PDA, see either Dr. Rawlinson or Dr. Bartel in the ITAM Department. Please do not go to the ITS Department (in Boullion) as the department is not yet prepared to support PDAs.

 

To give ITS time to process your registration, this process should be done at least one hour before we attempt to log on to the system.

 

Enable Wireless

1.                  If the blue & green lights in the wireless system are flashing, skip this step

2.                  If the blue & green lights in the wireless system are NOT flashing, depress the Wireless on/off button (bottom, right corner of the PDA). A “Wireless Enable” message will appear on the screen, and the lights will begin to flash.

 

Locate the MAC Address

From the Today Screen on your PDA, select –

1.                  Start

2.                  Settings

3.                  Connections tab

4.                  Dell WLAN Utility

5.                  Advanced tab

6.                  Network Troubleshooting option

7.                  Advanced option

8.                  Locate the MAC Address and write it down

9.                  Exit to main menu by clicking OK in the top right corner

 

On your desktop computer –

1.                  Open Internet Explorer and Log on to https://asherah.cts.cwu.edu

2.                  Log in using your full-context username (example: .wildcat.w.students.cwu) and password.

3.                  Select/key

a.       Building: Shaw-Smyser

b.      Category: Wireless

c.       Tag #: (skip this option)

d.      Hardware Address: Key the MAC address you wrote down from the above steps. NO hyphens or spaces.

e.       Operating System: Windows CE

f.        Click on the Agree and Submit button

 

To give ITS time to process your registration, this process should be done at least one hour before attempting to log on to the system.
Getting Your PDA Online

 

On your PDA –

 

Open Odyssey Client

1.                  Start

2.                  Settings

3.                  Connections

4.                  Odyssey

5.                  Settings

6.                  Enable Odyssey

7.                  OK

 

Open the  Odyssey Client

1.                                 Tap the icon (looks somewhat like a planet) on the bottom right corner of your Today Screen

 

Select the following options in the Odyssey Client

1.                                             Settings

2.                                             Configure

3.                                             Networks

4.                                             Add

5.                                             Key in cwu

6.                                             Next Button

7.                                             Association Mode: Open

8.                                             Encryption Method: WEP

9.                                             in box next to Authenticate using 802.1x

10.                                         in box next to Keys will be generated automatically for data privacy

11.                                         Next button

12.                                         Key in username with no context (e.g., wildcatw)

13.                                         Select Prompt for Password option radio button

14.                                         Next

15.                                         If not already listed: Use Add to select EAP/TTLS

16.                                         Clear the next to Validate Server Certificate

17.                                         Leave EAP/TTLS authentication anonymous

18.                                         Next

19.                                         Select PAP from drop-down list

20.                                         Next

21.                                         Finish

22.                                         OK
