Health, Human Performance and Nutrition : Graduate Program

Purpose & Objectives

The Masters of Science degree in Physical Education, Health and Leisure Studies prepares the student to function as a professional in the areas of human movement studies (science of coaching and human performance), wellness and health promotion, health and physical education teaching). In addition to general university requirements for admission to the Master's program, full admission to the graduate program in Physical Education, Health and Leisure Studies requires an undergraduate degree with a major in physical education, health, or exercise science; or a major closely related to the student's desired area of emphasis.

Program Description

The following areas of interest are offered within the department:

• Exercise Science
• Physical Education (Master's Degree On-line)
• Nutrition

The student shall complete at least forty-five (45) credits as outlined in an approved course of study filed with the Office of Graduate Studies and Research. The course of study is structured in consultation with the student's academic advisor, and is approved by the graduate program director and department. It will include a required core of sixteen (16) credits and appropriate courses in the student's area of emphasis. The course of study (45 credits) is to consist of all 500 level and above course work.

Admission Requirements

• Baccalaureate degree from an accredited four-year institution
• Minimum 3.0 undergradute GPA (last two years)
• Three lettersof recommendation
• Statement of purpose

Assistantships

Graduate teaching assistantships are available to outstanding graduate candidates with some professional experience, and are awarded on a competitive basis. The teaching assistantship has a worth of approximately $11,000. Out-of-state tuition is waived and health insurance is provided.

Instructional opportunities are available in the Physical Education activity course program, and in undergraduate laboratory classes. Coaching opportunities may be available in athletics.
