Bridges to Baccalaureate
| The goal of the Bridges to Baccalaureate Program between Central Washington University (CWU) and Yakima Valley Community College (YVCC) is to increase the numbers of students transferring from YVCC with a Direct Transfer Associate's Degree (DTA) into the Primate Behavior and Ecology (PBE) degree at CWU. Through this goal, we intend to increase underrepresented groups of practicing primatologists in various career settings, particularly in the biomedical sciences. This project is funded by a Bridges to the Baccalaureate grant through the National Institutes of Health. According to the program announcement: |
|
"Bridges to the Future specifically targets underrepresented minority students, defined as students who belong to a racial group that is underrepresented in the biomedical sciences. These minority groups include, but are not limited to, African Americans, Hispanic Americans, Native Americans (including Alaska Natives), and natives of the U.S. Pacific Islands." |

- Prepare members of underrepresented groups for careers in Primatology through coursework and first hand experience in research and husbandry.
- Provide collaborative faculty-student research experiences culminating in research presentation or publication.
- Increase the number of underrepresented ethnic minority students enrolling in CWU's Primate Behavior & Ecology program and completing the PBE degree and a degree in the second major.
- Provide a seamless transition and articulation from the 2-year institution to the 4-year institution.
- Provide excellence in advising at the 2-year and 4-year institutions through faculty and student mentoring.
Through these objectives, we will make the intellectual talents of underrepresented minorities available to the biomedical science research enterprise.
These objectives will be obtained through: funding, coursework, research opportunities, and student recruitment and support. |
