![]() Parent FAQIs it true that GEAR UP is only for certain students?GEAR UP provides services to all 6th, 7th, and 8th students during the 2006/2007 school year. Some parents have questioned whether the after school program is only for students with special needs, but the program is for all students in these grades. The after school program provides a homework room and tutoring assistance. Field trips and additional enrichment activities will be starting in October. What do I need to do to get my child involved in the after school program? All students participating in the after school program need to have a registration form/permission slip on file with the GEAR UP office. These forms are available on this website, at the Middle School office, at the East Elementary School office, and at the GEAR UP office. Once a form is on file for the school year, you will not need to do anything else unless there is a change in status such as a new medical concern, change in custody, etc. I signed my student up for the program, but I'm not sure if they are attending as they are supposed to, what should I do?All GEAR UP students are asked to sign in and out of the program on a daily basis. If you wish to check when they have attended, you may contact the GEAR UP office. In addition, if you have special concerns related to your student's attendance, you can notify GEAR UP of the days your student will be attending the program and GEAR UP staff will contact you if your student does not attend that day. How does GEAR UP know what homework my student needs help with?GEAR UP staff strive to work closely with teachers in order to be aware of current assignments and expectations of students. In addition, GEAR UP staff regularly check the progress reports of students attending the after school program. Students who have Ds and Fs or missing assignments are provided with extra assistance and GEAR UP staff review their work and place them on more frequent progress report monitoring to assist them to increase their grades. If students are struggling in classes, it is most helpful for them to attend the after school program three or more days a week. This helps them to develop consistent study and work habits. Is it true that high school students can help in the after school program?Yes, high school students are welcome and encouraged to help with the GEAR UP program. Juniors and Seniors may earn college credit by volunteering for 33 hours in the GEAR UP program, attending 12 hours of college classes, and completing a portfolio. In order to participate, high school students must be in good standing. This year high school junior and seniors have the opportunity to enroll in the GEAR UP independent study course and work with the GEAR UP program during the day. These students will be able to earn both high school and college credit simultaneously. For more questions, you may contact the GEAR UP office. I want to help with GEAR UP, but I'm not sure how I can help.GEAR UP welcomes parent involvement in the program. There are many ways you can help with the GEAR UP program including donations of snacks for the after school program, volunteering to speak about a career or hobby, teaching a special class, tutoring students, chaperoning field trips, and helping in the GEAR UP office. In addition, there are volunteer opportunities both during the school day and after school. If you have additional questions about the OMS GEAR UP program, please contact Jodi DeCesari at 826-8327. |
