Summary:
Cooperative Problem Solving is a 15-hour experiential training designed to help CWU employees (faculty and staff) understand and practice the Cooperative Problem Solving model for managing conflict. The process focuses on encouraging mutual agreement and developing positive relationships.
Background:
In the Fall of 2003, the CWU Presidents Cabinet approved the presentation of this workshop, and encourages the participation of all faculty and staff. The 5-week,
15- hour class is offered each academic quarter, and to date, over 100 employees
have participated.
Cost:
This workshop is coordinated and presented through the CWU Ombuds Office, and is
offered free of charge to CWU faculty and staff.
Presenters:
The Ombudsperson, Donna Kramer is trained in the Cooperative Problem Solving model and serves as the primary trainer for these workshops. In addition, each workshop
session is co-facilitated by a member of DIRECT, the Dispute Resolution Consultation and Training team of CWU.
The Cooperative Problem Solving workshop model is;
- based on the book, Getting to Yes, by Roger Fisher & William Ury of the Harvard Negotiation Project. The Harvard Negotiation Project is a research project at Harvard University that works on negotiation problems and develops and disseminates improved methods of negotiation and mediation. It is part of the Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law school and it's activities include; Theory Building, Education & Training, Publications and Action Research.
- sponsored by UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific & Cultural Organization. These materials are part of the UNESCO Multimedia training
kit which provides, free of charge, an integrated set of multimedia training materials and resources to empower individuals & communities.
- developed by Search for Common Ground, an international non-profit,
non-governmental organization based in Washington, D.C. Search for
Common Ground is dedicated to transforming conflict into cooperative
action. Founded in 1982, the organization now operates in 14 countries
working with local partners to strengthen local capacity to deal with conflict.
The Cooperative Problem Solving process focuses on encouraging mutual agreements and developing positive relationships. The workshop is highly interactive and addresses;
- treating conflict as a natural resource
- how to attack problems while respecting people
- raising an issue in a constructive manner
- exploring opposing positions to discover shared interests
- understanding individual & cultural perceptions
- generating options to address all parties needs
- crafting clear and healthy solutions
- managing emotions
- insuring two-way communication
- choosing when to use a cooperative approach
- being a peacemaker while resolving conflicts
