QUESTION: LibraryD1

AAVP

Accounting
Faculty notify the department chair if they want the library to acquire additional holdings.

Anthropology
We are unclear what the process is for acquiring new books.

We have a faculty member who is designated as our library representative and this person parcels out the book notices to various faculty depending on their areas of expertise—although it is often hard to tell from the notice what a book is really about. We receive stacks of announcements and are asked to rate them on the cursory information available on publisher’s printouts.

We do this and send back our ratings—with the understanding that anything below a “1" is not likely to be ordered. Are we our own bibliographers or is there another selection process such as regular ordering from the new book lists of specific social science publishers?

Management
CB faculty participate in library acquisitions with each CB department assigning a library representative. The library assigns a subject area librarian to assist students and faculty in the CB.

Math
Communication with the library is done through the Department’s Library Liaison.

Music
The music faculty library/liaison works with the music librarian to keep current with standard music publications and collects requests from department faculty. These requests are then forwarded to the library’s collection development librarian. The library specialist also works closely with the faculty in acquiring book, scores, and recordings, and separately orders materials for the collections. Often when new faculty members arrive on campus, they ask the library to acquire materials on their subject area before fall term starts. The library specialist orders these items through the music library’s account and often these materials are rushed through Collection Development so that new faculty and their students have access to these items during the fall term or later on in the school year. Students’ suggestions for music library acquisitions are either referred to their faculty liaison or handled directly by the library specialist.

In addition, any faculty requesting the purchase of a specific booth or other media item submits that request to the library through the library representative

Individual faculty needs are brought to the Library Representative who brings them collectively to the Department for discussion if necessary. The department discusses current and future needs each time a program review is done and when new faculty join the Physics Department. In general, this approach has proven satisfactory and the library has proven responsive within the limited resources available.

PoliticalScience
The Chair serves as library collections and acquisitions liaison; periodically, the library sends out review cards of new titles, and the Chair circulates these around the department. Each faculty member ranks certain selections from one to three - from essential to “please buy if funds available,” (or not at all, meaning do not buy) and the cards are sent back to the library. Presumably, this ranking is used to determine which selections will be purchased for the library from the department’s allocated budget. The Chair also occasionally discusses library journal holdings and the like with relevant librarians.
