Nutrition Science Club

CWU's Nutrition Science Club is made up of undergraduate and graduate students majoring or minoring in Food Science and Nutrition and students with a general interest in nutrition.  The purpose of the club is to provide learning and leadership opportunities in the fields of food science, dietetics,  and nutritional sciences outside of the classroom.  The club sponsors lectures/presentations/demonstrations,  participates in community service projects, organizes field trips, and more.

Fall 2007 Activities

*Tuesday October 9 @ 6:00 pm in Michaelsen room 129
First Nutrition Science Club meeting of the year.  Over 35 nutrition students attended the first meeting.  Projects for the fall quarter were discussed including continuation of the Grab and Go Program at Super 1 supermarket, initiation of a nutrition labeling program with local restaurants and the Kittitas County Health Department's Shape Up Program, involvement with the Ellensburg Community Garden, establishing a CWU Nutrition College Bowl team, plus other activities.  Students are encouraged to sign up on facebook.com and add the Nutrition Science Club as one of their groups.

* Tuesday, October 16 @ 5:30 pm in Michaelsen room 129
The Dietetic Internship Application Process
Dr. Bennett will discuss the process by which students apply for admission into dietetic internships.  Completion of these accredited programs  is a requirement for those seeking careers as Registered Dietitians.  This program is useful for senior level students applying this winter for admission in the summer and fall.  It is also useful (perhaps even more so), for junior and sophomore level students wanting to learn what they need to do to improve their chances of admission into these competitive programs.

* Thursday, October 18 @ 6:00 pm in Michaelsen room 129
Summer Field Experience Seminar
Linda Cashman will discuss with students interested in doing a summer field experience examples of past experiences and the process for establishing one.  Students who completed field experiences last summer will provide a brief overview of their experiences.  Dietetic-related experience is often a critical factor in determining who gets admitted into dietetic internships.   Since many health care institutions are now requiring additional paperwork, students planning on doing a summer experience are urged to attend.

* Tuesday, November 6 @ 6 pm in Michaelsen room 129
Second Nutrition Science Club meeting.

2007 annual meeting of the American Dietetic Association (Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo, FNCE)
Min Kim, Liane Fernyhough, and Kim Warfel along with four faculty members from CWU's Food Science and Nutrition Program attended the annual conference in Philadelphia, PA.  This conference was attended by over 11,000 participants.  Six posters were presented by CWU faculty, graduate students and undergraduate students.  Participants were able to learn about the most recent developments in the dietetic profession, attend sessions specifically for students, view (and consume) hundreds of products from food related companies, and meet many dietitians.  The meeting held each fall will be held next year in Chicago.  Students are urged to consider attending this valuable experience.
