Introduction

You have been asking your parents for 5 whole years to let you plan your family vacation. FINALLY they have let your plan a 10 day road trip extravaganza with exciting sites, incredible statues, monumental museums and fun- filled excitement for the whole family. Because you will be missing school you must record EVERYTHING that you do, even plan where you will you sleep, eat, and get gas. You must have guessed by this point that you will have to plan a budget for your family vacation. You will have the option of driving 3 different vehicles and going anywhere in Washington state that you choose.

Task

You may work with a partner to complete your road trip itinerary if you choose. You will be giving a short presentation to the class about your trip; where you went, how much money you spent, if you were under, over or right on your budget, what activities you participated in, and a general summary of your road trip. To go along with this presentation you will need to provide some visual documentation of the trip. Some examples could be: a video, power point, poster presentation, and artifacts.

Turned into the teacher at the end of the project will be a daily travel log that must include the following: starting and ending destination, miles traveled, did you stop for gas yes or no? if so how much did you spend, and how many miles did you travel on that tank of gas, activities you participated in and how much they cost per person, where did you stay the night, how much did it cost, what did you eat and how much did it cost for each meal, what requirements did you meet for the project on this day, and your step by step driving directions.

Your parents want to make sure that you are still having an educational experience so you MUST visit at least: 3 different historical sites (ex: Ft. Nisqually) , 1 museum (ex: Seattle Art Museum), 2 national parks (ex: Mt Ranier National Park) and 1 four year university where you must participate on the campus tour (ex: Central Washington University).

You will be planning a ten day road trip and your budget will depend on the car you choose to take.

2008 Hummer H3. Your budget will be $1,500.00
2008 Toyota Prius. Your budget will be $700.00
2008 Honda Civic. Your budget will be $900.00

Pick your car carefully! Just because one has a bigger budget doesn't mean you will have extra money to spend. This budget is all your parents will be giving you, if you wish to fund raise more money you must do so on your own and discuss this in your daily travel log. Each day of your trip you will be given a random fate that will either have a positive or negative impact on your budget or road trip. It might be smart to plan ahead for these events.

These are question to ask yourself when planning your road trip, don't feel like you need to turn in the answers to these questions they are here to help you.

Where in Washington is your ending destination?
What is the most cost effective way to get to your destination?
Will you be able to make it home in time?
Are you running low on gas money?
Are you being safe with destinations and lodging locations?
Are you using your money wisely? Have you completed your requirements before visiting fun activities?
What details will help you present your information to the class?
What information should you know about the cars before making your decision?
What information should you know about the places you want to go to before you plan your trip?
What do I need to pack?
Are your driving directions complete and easy to follow?
Where will you stop to sleep?
Are you taking into consideration your groups interests or just your own?
How will you present your information?
What materials will you need for you presentation?

These are resources that you will find helpful in planning your road trip. Each site will help you with a different part of the project so make sure to look at all of them!

Mapquest This is a website that will provide easy step by step driving directions.
Kelly Blue Book This website will describe the vehicles that you must choose from for the trip. You are able to find all sorts of information such as gas mileage, new or used, and consumer reviews.
Experience Washington Experience Washington is a great website that you can visit to get ideas about what you want to experience on your road trip. Things that you can do for fun, to learn more about the history of our state, and things you can do outside.

Now that you have spent a lot of time planning a road trip for your family you can planning actually goes into something like this as well as how much life costs. Make sure to thank your parents for all they do for you. You have gained knowledge in math, geography, history, writing and art. We are excited about the work you have done and the knowledge you have gained!
