June 17, 2002
I logged 7 hrs today. I worked on sorting and filing transportation maps, as well as got oriented to the position doing some background reading.
June 18, 2002
I logged 7.5 hrs today. I finished my map filing task and was briefed on a land-use survey project, and brainstormed some ideas for categories for the survey. I also was briefed on a bicycle/ped trails project, and I inventoried obstacles that would cause a problem for some proposed trails.
June 19, 2002
I logged 6 hrs today. I put my obstacle data from yesterday into a word processing document. Then I compared old obstacles to my current list, and added some more proposed ideas from the trail committee to an ArcView map of the county (yeah got a lesson in GIS).
June 20, 2002
I logged 7 hrs today. I went into the field and took some pictures of a Dike trail that was constructed due to some of the planning in the office. I put them into a PowerPoint presentation. I also finished by work on the ArcView map of the county, and combined some features. That took a while to figure out.
June 21, 2002
Today we had a staff meeting in the morning and then I put together a power point presentation for my boss for a conference that he is attending in Phoenix on Monday.
July 8, 2002
Today I started a transit need assessment for Cowlitz County. I am contacting about 12 different transit agencies to ask them a series of questions to help gather information for the Cowlitz Transit Authority who is trying to extend their serviced countywide. After the assessment is finished I will write out the report, but for now I am waiting on feedback.
July 9, 2002
Today I started the morning with calling back transit agencies for the needs assessment for Cowlitz Transit Authority. After I went through the transit list then, we left and went to Wahkiakum County for the afternoon to continue working on our land use survey.
July 10, 2002
Today I spent the entire day in Wahkiakum County working on the land use survey; hopefully we will only need another half a day to finish it up.
July 22, 2002
Today I brainstormed some possible ideas and considerations for the trail project. I received more responses on my transit survey so I tallied that data. Then I worked on my land use inventory database in ArcView.
July 23, 2002
Today I worked on the land use inventory for the Wahkiakum County Comprehensive Plan, entering data for the map portion.
July 24, 2002
Today I did some pick up jobs around the office, like requests from outside clients for some census information. I worked a lot of the U.S. Census home page. I worked for a while on my land use inventory database, and then I drove down to Cathlamet to deliver some packages for the office.
July 25, 2002
Today I came in and finished the database for the land-use inventory in Wahkiakum County (the information that we have so far). I also incorporated a couple of cities we already had information for into the database. The end of the day I just did miscellaneous stuff around the office.
July 26, 2002
Today I worked on pulling some information off the Internet about Wahkiakum County and the State of Washington and putting the information into graphs to be used in the text of the comprehensive plan for Wahkiakum County.
July 29, 2002
Today I did a lot of clerical work helping the secretaries. I folded pamphlets, banded books, and answered phones. I also got a Excel spreadsheet of land use information for Wahkiakum County and started tallying the land use to compare to the data that I have collected in the field.
July 30, 2002
Today I went to Raymond in Pacific County to try to help them convert old data on their street network into a new database for the DOT. The database was about the length and widths of streets and the severity of damage, so I helped to come up with a formula to convert the data into a useful form.
July 31, 2002
Today I ran down to Vancouver to take the formulas and ideas that we did in Raymond down to the DOT to determine if our ideas were going to work. Then when I got back to the office, I did some tallying on the spreadsheet land use sent to us and then made a plan for collecting inventory for tomorrow.
August 1, 2002
Today we went to Wahkiakum County to finish up the last parts of our land use survey, and fill in some of the holes and questions that we had. We did the Altoona area on the Columbia River, it was so pretty and peaceful I didnít want to come home.
August 2, 2002
Today I wrote a newsletter about my self for the agencies newsletter that goes out every month. I also finished tallying the land use codes from Wahkiakum County, and then I got a map of potential off-road trails for the trails project I am working on and looked at areas that need to be field checked, which I will do first thing next week.
August 5, 2002
Today I was in the field today working on the trail project. We have decided to focus on the off road trails for now, so today I worked on field checking all the potential off road trails for obstacles and feasibility.
August 6, 2002
Today I was in the field again for the entire day. I was field checking potential off road trails.
August 7, 2002
Today I typed out my field research from the last two days and got it ready to present and determine which trails we are going to focus on. I put together some charts for our transportation planner in Excel, on 5 different counties. I stared to compare a park inventory for Wahkiakum County.
August 8, 2002
Today I compared our inventory of park that we did during our land use survey in Wahkiakum County to the old Wahkiakum County Comprehensive Plan to see if we missed anything, and what was new. Then I started putting the information that I had collected a while ago into Excel charts. The information was on the survey I did to all the transit Authorities in Washington State.
August 12, 2002
Today I continued working on my putting my phone survey information in spreadsheets and charts. Then I had a meeting with the trail planner and informed her about the fieldwork that I had done and we talked about some issues that needed to be addressed.
August 13, 2002
Today I worked on a database for historical monuments in Cowlitz County that we should be considering for links in the trail project. I made a database in Excel and checked some existing properties at the Assessors office to make sure the buildings were still standing. Oh and then you came to visit.
August 14, 2002
Today I went into the field and took pictures of some obstacles in our proposed off-road trails and of some places to consider continuing the trails.
August 19, 2002
Today I met with the trail planner again and we went over some areas on the map of question. I have to go and look up so public land and gaps in public land to see if it can be acquired for a trail. Then I picked up my GIS database on the land use and continued entering the last bit of data that I had collected.
August 20, 2002
Today I finished discussing some possibilities for the trail plan with the planner. I added some attributes to my land use database (a type field) and found out that the assessors database is very hard to work with. I did an inventory of historical places to add to our trail plan, but I canít get it to geocode to the parcel database because they only show address for primary residence. Anyway, now I am headed to the field to check some public land for right of way on the trail plan.
August 21, 2002
Today I did some fieldwork, checking obstacles on trails. We had a meeting with the engineer from the diking district to answer some question about ownership and right of way for some possible dike and ditch trails. After the meeting we sat down with out map and list of obstacles and came up with some scenarios of trails and connections that make sense to bring to the committee.
August 22, 2002
Today I had a meeting with Steve Harvey this morning to make sure we were on the right track and getting the right focus for the trail plan that we are taking to the committee. The rest of the day I did some more field checks and photos for trails.
August 23, 2002
Today I started writing a narrative for all the trails that I have researched. I am putting together a description of each one, with the good points and their obstacles to bring to the committee. I also worked on clipping out some Agriculture land on the Wahkiakum County Land use database. I talked with out transportation planner about a presentation she wants me to put together for her next week with the survey information that I collected.
August 26, 2002
Today I worked on a PowerPoint presentation for the CTA Board meeting (Cowlitz Transit Assessment). The PowerPoint was about the transit survey I have been working on. I also worked on putting a handout together for the board at the meeting.
August 27, 2002
Today I finished up the PowerPoint, made some corrections and then it took me most of the day to print it out. I had to do it in color so I had to print all the copies off the computer. I put all the information into a packet and got them bound for the meeting.
August 28, 2002
Today I did some last minute idea field checks for the trails plan, which took me most of the morning and then I went to the Cowlitz Transit Authority board meeting early to set up the projector and lap top for my powerpoint presentation. I gave my presentation and all went well.
August 29, 2002
Today I went to Wahkiakum County to go through their land use maps. We took a printout of the map that I have been working on and its progress so far, and then we looked through their maps that were town by sections of township and range and looked for ownership that wasnít private, such as logging agriculture, government and state owned land. We penciled the information onto my existing map and now I have to enter the data we collected electronically.
August 30, 2002
Today I worked on typing up the text for all the fieldwork on trails I have been doing. I have to get them in a word document for the presentation of our findings on September 11. I typed all day long and Iím still not done
September 3, 2002
Today I finished typing the text for the fieldwork on trails that I have been doing. I went through it all a couple of times and added some words about the on road connections. Then I went out in the field and checked a couple more trails.
September 4, 2002
Today I worked making a layer in Arcview of information that we might display on a map as pop-ups with pictures.
September 5, 2002
Today I edited the text for my trails documents and made some format changes. Then I went into the field to take some more pictures needed for the documents.
September 9, 2002
Today I added some text to my word document about my trail research. I also ran through some display ideas for my trail map to go along with the word document for the board meeting on Thursday. I had some extra time so I went to Rainier, Oregon and started on a survey for the Transportation development plan. I counted businesses and their number of employees and the single-family residents in each census block group.
September 10, 2002
Today I edited more text for the trails meeting (has to be perfect). I put together a PowerPoint presentation for the Lewis and Clark Trail anniversary celebration that is coming to the area. After the PowerPoint I read through some trail plan designations and got familiar with local criteria and design methods for designating trails. I also made a welcome poster in Arcview for a new employee of the Cowlitz Substance abuse coalition that works out of our office.
September 11, 2002
Today I finished the poster I started last night, and then I added some points to an Arcview file to label the trails on the trail map for our meeting. The staff took me out to lunch today for a farewell. Then in the afternoon I went to Rainier to work on the survey for the transportation development plan.
September 12, 2002
Today I changed a couple of trail write-ups to make a little bit more sense, and then got all our materials ready for the meetings. I worked on some pie charts for the COG newsletter. At the end of the day we had our trails meeting, and I gave my presentation to the committee.
September 13, 2002
Friday the 13thóscary!!! Today is my last day so I came in and got all my mess cleaned up and gave all my information to the right people and made everything neat again. I worked on the Wahkiakum Land use map for awhile, and then said good bye and thank you.
